What Christmas Looks Like
What are your family traditions?
Is it a big gathering, or just a few people who really care about each other?
Christmas for me is a small family gathering. My brother and sister-in-law are coming this year, so there will be 7 of us (8 if you count the cat).
Our tree was decorated after Dad finished work for the year, as we do every year unless we can convince him to let us put it up earlier. There are white lights and quite a variety of ornaments. Some handmade, others purchased, and every year we have a new ornament for each family member (See my other blog for the Tiny Stockings) .
There are Christmas cards on a string on the wall, actually there are now 2 strings full (aren't command hooks wonderful).
We have been doing Christmas baking (although not as much this year as other years). I made the pudding this year - my first attempt, so we won't know until tomorrow if it tastes good. Today I was decorating the chocolate log - a chocolate sponge roll covered in chocolate. This year we have 2 branches, both covered in milk chocolate, and the main log part covered in dark chocolate. I have yet to dust it with icing sugar, as I am waiting for the chocolate to harden.
Tomorrow we will start cooking the Christmas dinner (lunch) at about 10.15am. Lamb and Turkey will be on the menu, as not everyone likes turkey. It's not a full turkey, just a rolled turkey breast. There will also be roasted vegetables.
As the meal is cooking we will probably open presents (depending on when everyone arrives). We don't put presents under the tree. Instead everyone has a sack (or something) and we take turns to give our gifts to the other family members.
Before we open any gifts, we read the Christmas story and sometimes sing a carol or two. We do this because we are remembering the reason why we celebrate - the birth of our Savior, Jesus! He was the greatest gift. What we give to each other are just tokens.
1.00pm is when we plan to eat. There will be handmade bonbon crackers, laughter and talking.
I have no idea what we will do in the afternoon, that will depend on how tired everyone is and whether we opened all the gifts before lunch.
Tea will be salad and cold meat - and the pudding!
So that is what is planned. But what it will actually look like I do not know.
Merry Christmas to all my readers and followers!
I pray that you will remember (or learn) the real meaning of Christmas.
God Bless.

'Belated Follower' by Colleen L. Reece
"At this point in his thinking, Benjamin always faltered. What right had he to take a wife, when he vowed to find the Messiah? Reason argued, it may be years. Soon Miriam will be gone. Who will protect this child of God from such as Darius, whose face fills with lust as she passes by? From the depths of his soul Benjamin cried, "Oh, Lord, what would You have me do?"
While this is not exactly a Christmas novel, it does seem to have more significance at this time of the year. It is an older book, published in 1995, so you may not be able to get your hands on a copy. I borrowed this one from a friend.

'Gideon's Gift' by Karen Kingsbury
'Brian took the envelope, his hands shaking. Maybe the person had signed the card. Maybe they would finally know where this amazing abundance had come from. He slid his finger beneath the flap and pulled out a folded piece of paper. As he did, something fell onto the counter.'
Try this one for a great inspirational Christmas story. My copy of Gideon's Gift comes in the 4 volume book which also includes stories about Maggie, Sarah and Hannah.

Notes to a Working Woman by Luci Swindoll
So ominous is the threat of change that we submit to tedium, boredom, and apathy. Then what happens? We feel trapped. We're in a rut. Life is a grind. We hate our circumstances and ourselves ... and often those around us. I've heard those comments over and over and over from people who want to move ahead, yet wonder why they don't. They're scared to death of risk.
Don't live your life in fear, my friend. Have courage. Believe your circumstances can change, then step out. Get at it. The philosopher Descartes wrote, "Desire awakens only to things that are thought possible." Our characters simply cannot develop until we are willing to be courageous in our circumstances. Stop holding back!
Luci Swindoll is a woman I greatly admire. I have read a few of her books in recent times. She is someone I would love to have dinner with one day. Actually, I briefly met her brother, Chuck Swindoll, when he was last in Australia. Anyway, I highly recommend reading any one of Luci's books, but I have to say that my favorite is 'I Married Adventure'. I've been passing that one around my friends so often, that it is rarely on my bookshelf.

The Red Siren by M. L. Tyndall
"Dozens of pirates spat from the hatches onto the deck. Brandishing weapons, they rushed toward his startled crew. One by one, his men dropped their buckets to the wooden planks with hollow thuds and slowly raised their hands. Their anxious gazes shot to Dajon, seeking his command. The pirates chortled as Dajon's fear exploded into a searing rage. They were surrounded."

Friday Fill-Ins #152
1. Wait! Wait, don't forget to give me a hug.
2. My friend followed at once by turning her car around and following me as I drove home.
3. The trouble is I really don't know what I want to do next, and don't feel motivated right now.

5. With a faint pop my shoulder cracked at the table last night - don't worry, it often does that.
6. The sky looked shadowy and ominous.
7. And as for the weekend, Friday night I wrapped Christmas presents and watched a few episodes of the West Wing season 1, today I have done some housework (which I hate) and hope to relax this afternoon and Sunday, I want to have what may be our last GNG breakfast meeting for the year, have fellowship at Church and spend some time with family and friends!

Friday Fill-In #150
Ok, so I haven't done this for a while, and I am now a day late (depending on your time zone I guess). But here it is:
1. The last band I saw live was Westlife.
2. What I look forward to most on Christmas is having some food that we only get at that time of year - like turkey.
3. My Christmas/holiday shopping is in progress.
4. Thoughts of trying to figure out what I want to do with my life fill my head especially now while I am between jobs.
5. I wish I could wear yellow sometimes.
6. Bagpipes are a strange, yet fascinating instrument.
7. And as for the weekend, last night I finished up a project that I started in the afternoon, today my plans have included working in the backyard to help get the new soil spread to even up the ground and Sunday, I want to go to church for fellowship and teaching and relax in the afternoon!
Ok, so you're probably wondering where I've been all this time, well the truth of the matter is that since my employment was terminated (thanks to the Global Financial Crisis) I have been busy on Fridays and generally on the computer before the blank parts are up, given time differences between me and the originator of this very interesting meme.
Let's see, there have been friends returning from overseas, parties to go to, packing to do for a recent trip and a whole range of other activities, and sometimes I have just been too tired to check the computer.
I can't show you the project I finished because it is a present and I don't want the recipient to see it before they receive it. But let's just say that since I have my room nearly in order, I have been able to unpack my craft stuff and got a little creative with some of the gadgets that I won from magazines.
As for my room, there are still a few things to sort out, but I should have time for those now that I am between jobs. I'm trying to decide what I will be doing next - still in accounting or something else entirely. Mostly I just want to follow God's will, but right now that is a mystery to me. My heart's desire is still out of reach, and seems no closer than it did 5 years ago. SIGH!
Quick, change the subject before I get morose.
My book collection is still increasing. Ooo that reminds me, I need to update Shelfari. I've been spending too much time on Facebook to keep everything else up to date.
Speaking of Facebook, it's calling my name!

You'll Get Your Quilt
Sunday after church, a mom asked her very young daughter
what the lesson was about. The daughter answered, "Don't be
scared; you'll get your quilt."
Needless to say, the mom was perplexed.
Later in the day, the pastor stopped by for tea and the mom
asked him what that morning's Sunday school lesson was
about.
He said, "Be not afraid; thy comforter is coming."

At Peace in the Playpen
Mary was almost crazy with her three young kids. She
complained to her best friend Judy, "They're driving me
nuts! They give me no rest! I'm half way to the funny farm!"
"What you need," said Judy, "is a playpen."
So Mary bought a playpen. A few days later, Judy called to
ask how things were going.
"Superb! I can't believe it," Mary said. "I get in that pen
with a good book and a chocolate bar, and the kids don't
bother me for hours!"

FarmTown on Facebook
FarmTown on Facebook is something I've really got into lately. For those of you who don't know what it is, it's a game where you plow land, plant crops and harvest them. There are farm animals and trees and all manner of decorations, including flowers.
I guess you could probably say I'm addicted to it.
Anyway, I had seen what looked like waterfalls on some people's farms and wondered how they did it, especially since I knew that you couldn't overlap the river pieces. Then today I was on a friend's farm and she had done it, so I asked how. She directed me to this YouTube video. So now I'm going to try it on my farm and see how it goes.
Sorry if it takes a while to load. It's a long video.

Design Discoveries
They give snippits from a variety of suppliers and then provide a very helpful list of who they used at the back of the magazine.
I love it when I see things from Ikea - especially since I love going there and have a few things from Ikea in my home.
Today I've been inspired by a few items from Equator Homewares.
As a general rule I'm not a fan of woven furniture and wicker baskets (they accumulate too much dust and I'm just not that inspired by it), however among these items are some gorgeous wood and bamboo pieces. I wish I could put some pictures here, but you'll just have to have a look for yourself.
My favorite is the Montego folding writing desk.

Bible Story
James (age 4) was listening to a Bible story. His dad read,
"The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out
of the city but his wife looked back and was turned to
salt."
Concerned, James asked, "What happened to the flea?"

Memories of letters gone by
I had several. Most of mine came via an Australian magazine for children called Junior Clubhouse.
I mention this because today as I was going through some of the things I have had packed away in boxes, I discovered some of the letters that I had received. In particular the ones from 2 of my cousins and a girl from Tasmania.
I didn't read through them all as I didn't have the time, but I did open a couple for a look. Some were folded in fancy ways, others were written on different note papers. But the main thing about them is that they were all hand written.
I think I really miss that connection. I realised recently that I have a whole drawer full of different sets of writting paper, but I never use them. These days my connection with people is usually via email and other electronic media. The sentiments are the same, but they feel rather impersonal.
With the amount of writting paper in my posession I think I should start writting letters again.
One benefit of electroinc mail is that you don't have to have a physical storage location for it (other than space in the memory of your computer or online email service). Another is that the ink will not fade so that you cannot read it. But what if your computer crashes and you lose it? Then it is gone. I suppose the same could be said for a fire or flood damaging the stored letters.
What do you think?
The other thing I wondered as I looked through these letters, is what has become of my former pen pals?
I know what my cousins are doing, but what of the others. I must of had at least 5 or more people who I regularly corresponded with.
Where are they now? What direction has their life taken? Are they still alive? Have they married and had a family, or are they still single like me? Do they still live in the same town?
Since I received some of those letters I have moved 5 times.
If anyone reads this and has had pen pals in the past please let me know your thoughts. You could be one of my former correspondants, and I would love to know where life has taken you thus far.

Bargains!
A business near where I work is relocating to a new premises and so they don't have to take everything there they are selling some things. Earlier this week they put out some second hand filing cabinets and my Mum and sister each bought one. That saved each of them a couple of hundred dollars.
Then today there was a kitchen starter set for $70. I was told that normal retail price when on special would be $170, and more if it wasn't on special!!! It is now sitting in my car ready to be transported home.
It's Mum who calls me the bargain queen. I'm always finding things - clothes, scrapbooking supplies and other things. Then there was the online Interior Design course that I enrolled in recently - I saved $300 on the fees for that.
Mum asked me the other day if I had ever calculated how much I had saved on various things. I haven't, but it would certainly be interesting to find out. Not that I'm going to spend my time doing it, but it is an interesting idea.
I just call all my bargain hunting training to be a Proverbs 31 Woman.
