My Favourite Things - TEA

TEA

... "a drink with jam and bread!"

My love of tea began as a little girl when visiting Nanna and Papa (Dad's parents). Papa would always offer me a cup and pour it from the tea pot, raising the pot up and down to make bubbles!

The milk ALWAYS went in first and then the tea. Forget tea bags! It was always loose leaf black tea and you used a tea strainer while pouring to prevent the tea leaves from going in your cup.

There was a little chorus that Papa would sing sometimes and I found it. Listen to this (not sure about the choice of picture though):

My current love for different types of tea began more recently after I read Dead as a Scone by Ron and Janet Benrey.
This book, although fiction, got me thinking and interested in the different tastes of the teas mentioned. I even used a Darjeeling Tea packet as a bookmark!

I also found it facinating when the character, Flick (Felicity) was describing what happens when boiling water is poured on the tea leaves. Call it the 'tea dance'!

Anyway, if you want a bit more information about this try having a look at their website. You can find it here.

The idea to include this topic in My Favourite Things, came after seeing an episode of Treasure Hunt on the ABC. It was all about tea caddies and I was facinated by them, plus Tunbride Ware was mentioned. Unfortunately I can't find the episode anywhere to rewatch it, and no other information about it. It was filmed in 2002, so that's hardly surprising.

Anyway, my current interest in different types of tea was fuelled by discovering T2! T2 is a shop that sells teas of all kinds - black, green, white, red, fruit infusions (or as the French say, tisanes). And then they sell everything you need to be able to drink your tea - teapots, infusers, teacups and saucers.

My current favourites are Melbourne Breakfast, Perth Breakfast, Morning Tea (no longer available), and Turkish Apple.

I love being able to go into a store and try the teas they have available for tasting and finding out different ways you could have them. For example, Turkish Apple is yummy warm, but it is also perfect cold. It's one of my favourite drinks on a hot summer day - loaded with slices of fresh apple and a few fresh mint leaves! I really want to try the cinnamon one. I think that may be like spiced apple cider!!

A cup of tea really is a great thing. It can make you feel better when sad, and is best shared with a friend.

I'm even thinking of having High Tea for my next birthday!

My Favourite Things Hiatus

For all of you who are eagerly awaiting my next installment of "My Favourite Things", I am very sorry, but I just can't get it together at the moment.
Between study, grief and life in general, my time is almost completely taken up.
I have a really great one that I would love to share with you, but in my life some things had to go, and regular blogging was just one of those.

Hopefully I will be back at this before the year is out. I am only studying until July, so maybe ...

Just keep your eyes open because I will be back.

My Favourite Things - BUTTERFLIES

BUTTERFLIES

... have been one of my favourite things for a long time.

I have them all around my room - I have butterfly stickers on my wardrobe door; butterflies on my curtain fabric; butterfly magnets feature on my magnetic notice board.

My favourite type of butterfly is the glorious Ulysses Butterfly found in far north Queensland. They are black and iridescent blue!

For me, butterflies are a picture of how our lives change as we accept Jesus into our heart as our friend.

Before we accept Him we are like horrible little catapillars - we don't look good (on the inside). But when we do accept Him we become "a new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17) - beautiful and changed (on the inside).

My Favourite Things - TOASTED MARSHMALLOWS

TOASTED MARSHMALLOWS

Ok, now this sounds like a really funny thing to put in as one of My Favourite Things, but it's true and so here they are.

Toasting them at a bonfire is a lot of fun, but you can't always go to a bonfire.

These days I often toast them over a candle!

I love how they get soft and gooey!

But I only like white marshmallows! Thankfully you can get packets of just white ones, but only at petrol stations!

If I didn't have craft things out on my desk, I'd probably have a few right now!!

My Favourite Things - FLOWERS

FLOWERS are my theme for this week.

My absolute favourite flower is the Forget-Me-Not!

My Gran always had some growing in her garden.
I like the daintiness of them. Plus they are one of the few truly blue flowers.

My second favourite flowers are Daffodils! I love how they herald the coming of spring, and dance gaily in the wind.

My favourite colours in a Daffodil are cream petals with a peach trumpet.

I also like roses, violets and pansies.

My Favourite Things - BOOKS

Here we are, the first of 'My Favourite Things' posts!

BOOKS!

I've loved books for as long as I can remember. There are even photos of me "reading" before I was a year old (see below)!

These days I wonder if it may be an obsession. I'm always checking to see when new books from my favourite authors (hmm ... maybe we'll see this topic in the coming weeks) are coming out and getting impatient when they don't get published on time or take ages to make it to Australian stores.

The photo below is if my bookshelves.

The shelves on the far left hold DVDs, but I do have another bookshelf, not pictured here, filled and overflowing with books. You should be able to see at least one double row of books, although the second row on the shelf is not full.

I actually learned to read before I started school. My Mum taught me. I got really upset my first week at school when my teacher made me bring home books without words in them. Other children may have made up stories to go with the pictures, but I just wanted to read the words.

When we would go on long road trips as a family (we crossed the Nularbour Plain 6 times by road), I would always take a stack of books to read, and would always run out. We would often stop at Op Shops to look for more books for me to read.

Not only do I buy books, but I borrow them as well. I am often in the Library looking for new books to read, or re-borrowing favourites that I haven't bought ... yet!

I hope if I have children, I can pass on a love of books to them.

Blog Plans for 2011 continued

As I mentioned in my last post about blogging plans for 2011 I have been thinking about doing something relating to a song from 'The Sound of Music'.

Did you guess which song?

Yes, it's 'My Favourite Things'.

So this is the plan :
Every week on a nominated day (I haven't decided which yet), I will post something about one of my favourite things. There will be a button on the side, so feel free to follow along and join in. I can't promise I will look at everyone's posts because I will be very busy next year starting a new career (yes, I have finally given up on going back to accounting).
