'Praying for Your Future Husband' by Robin Jones Gunn and Tricia Goyer

"Here's a little secret about true love: it begins in the heart.
... I've always thought of the heart as being like a garden. Whatever is planted there will eventually grow if it it nurtured."

'Daily Encouragement for Single Women' by various authors

"Sometimes as Christians we are given the impression that grieving or crying somehow implies we don't trust God. That we don't believe He has everything under control. However in 1 Thessalonians 4, when Paul teaches on the subject of death, he is clear: grieve, but not without hope. Perhaps your heart is heavy over a recent loss. Go ahead. Cry your heart out. Jesus feels your pain and your tears are precious to Him."

I thought I would put in a teaser with a difference today. How many of you actually read the dedication at the start of the book? Or the acknowledgements?

My teaser comes from the dedication of the following book:

That Certain Spark by Cathy Marie Hake

'There are many forms of courage -
Blazing a new trail,
Taking an unpopular stand,
Stepping out in that moment of faith,
Laughter instead of tears for somone else's sake,
Enduring physical, spiritual, and emotional anguish,
Holding onto God with trust instead of desperation,
Forgiving as we were forgiven.
Loving one another.
Asking for help to bear a burden.'

Well, I'm back! My course is over, and yesterday I started a new job. Maybe I'll have more time for reading and blogging.

My teaser this week is from a book I'm reading for the second time (It will be part of my Contentment Reading Challenge for this year), by one of my current favourite authors.

Letter Perfect by Cathy Marie Hake

'"I'm so glad you see it my way." Ruth hopped up again. "I've already started a list of my favourite books." She pulled two sheets of crumpled paper from her sleeve.
Is there anything more she could possibly pull from her sleeves? A hanky or a fan is normal - but a knife and sheets of paper? This woman never ceases to amaze me.'

I can't believe it's taken me this long to read this classic, but then it wasn't on the booklist when I was at school (I have no idea why).

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

'"What a sweet woman Lady Middleton is!" said Lucy Steele.
Marianne was silent; it was impossible for her to say what she did not feel, however trivial the occasion; and upon Elinor therefore the whole task of telling lies when politeness required it, always fell. She did her best when thus called on, by speaking of Lady Middleton with more warmth than she felt, though with far less than Miss Lucy.'

I find it a real struggle to read this book. Part of it is the way words are spelled differently to how we spell them now.
I think I prefer watching the movie, although I recently discovered the new BBC mini-series version and really like that.
One thing that now makes more sense (no pun intended) is why Mrs John Dashwood was so insistent that her husband not give his sisters any money. I believe she wanted to preserve the family fortune for her son.

The Lightkeeper's Ball by Colleen Coble

'A sound came behind her, and she assumed is was Goldia until she smelled a man's cologne. She half turned at the furtive, sliding noise, but before she could see who was joining her, hard hands seized her from behind. The man's breath smelled of mint. She flailed at the assailant, but her fists struck only air. Her slippers slid along the polished deck, and the next moment she found herself bent over the railing, facing the turbulent water. The hard rail dug into her stomach and stole her breath. She tried to scream, but panic closed her throat as her balance tipped toward the water and away from the boat. With a last push from her assailant, she was plunging into the water with her arms pinwheeling.'

Stay tuned for more about this book very soon!

Hi! I'm back again. For how long I don't know. I'm just taking things a day at a time right now. The only reason I'm posting now is because I have a shocking head cold and can't make it to where I'm supposed to be.

A Cowboy's Touch by Denise Hunter

'She plucked a nearby dandelion puff and twirled it between her fingers. She should make a wish. ...

Wade still rested in the shade, his Father's Day picture at his elbow. Abigail closed her eyes and blew at the dandelion puff. When she opened her eyes, the spores were dancing away on the wind. She twirled the naked stem in her fingers.

"Make a wish?" Wade's eyes were open now.

"Maybe." '

Keep an eye out for some more about this book very soon!

The Torch of Triumph by Sally Laity and Dianna Crawford

'Taking care not to make any sudden moves, Evie slowly stooped down and tugged from the medicine box the thin, tightly woven rope Emily had taught her to use as a twitch. She began fashioning a loop. As she did so, she heard approaching footsteps crunching across the straw.
She smiled with relief. Susannah must have read her mind. "Over here. This silly colt would rather bleed to death than have me touch him." Finished with her loop, she rose and turned to hand it to Susannah.
But no peaches-and-cream complexion met her gaze. A blackened face striped with vermilion paint peered down at her through malevolent eyes.

The Fires of Freedom by Sally Laity and Dianna Crawford

'The crisp chilly air somehow reinforced her inner strength. She breathed deeply of it, waiting for him to speak. Dreading it. Wanting him to make everything right, but knowing there was no possible way he could.'

'Baker's Fatal Dozen' by Lisa Harris

'"In the rearview mirror. It's the stranger who fought with Ezri the day of the funeral." She pulled the car against the curb, this time slowing to a stop. "He came out of the alley beside the bakery. I think it's time to add another suspect to my list."'

Pursuit of Justice by DiAnn Mills

'A sharp bang startled her. A blowout. Bella lifted her foot from the gas pedal and gripped the steering wheel while maneuvering the car to the right side of the roaad. The left rear wheel bumped metal to the pavement as the car slowed to a stop, and she turned off the engine.
"Someone just shot out your tire." Vic pulled his weapon from his pocket.
Another bang leveled the front left tire. "A rifle." She leaned toward the right side of the car and retrieved the Glock 26 from her ankle holster. She lowered her windows and strained to her ears, listening for more rifle fire. Only the quiet sounds of birds and insects met her.'

I'm enjoying what I've read so far in this book, however I do have to point out a mistake. Right at the bottom of page 39 a particular type of dog is mentioned. In the book they are called 'Australian cow dogs'. The correct term is 'Australian cattle dogs'.

Marcia Schuyler by Grace Livingston Hill

'It was a lovely evening. The twilight was not yet over as she stepped from the low piazza that ran the length of the house bearing another above it on great white pillars. A drapery of wisteria in full bloom festooned across one end and half over the front. Marcia stepped back across the stone flagging and driveway to look up the purple clusters of graceful fairy-like shape tha embowered the house, and thought how beautiful it would look when the wedding guests should arrive the day after the morrow.'

I guess you might think this was an unusual teaser, but I just loved the description, particularly about the wisteria.

Becoming a Woman of Simplicity by Cynthia Heald

'How you respond to trials does affect the quality of your life. Difficulties in themselves are hard enough to endure, but the wrong reaction tends to compound our distress. Take time and let the Lord speak to you about how you handle hardship and what you might need for your endurance to grow.'

Last week a shared a teaser from a book by Mindy Starns Clark, and this week I'll be doing the same - from a different book, but the same series.

The Buck Stops Here by Mindy Starns Clark

'"Tom, if I knew the truth, the whole truth, about Bryan's death," I said, faltering, "would you and I have a future together? Could we go on, as a couple?"
He took a deep breath and slowly let it out.
"I don't know, Callie," he said finally. "I just don't know."'

Here we are in a new year - Happy New Year! - and I happen to be reading a book I've read before! You just can't pass up a great series or mystery, so here is my teaser:

Don't Take Any Wooden Nickels by Mindy Starns Clark

'We stood, and I thnked her before walking away. In a sort of daze, I collected my bags from the front desk and walked toward the door. As an afterthought, I turned back to the woman, who was now in the telephone area, dialing a number.
"Excuse me," I said, going back to her. She disconnected the call before she had finished dialing it.
"Yes?"
"Did Tom leave some paperwork for me, by any chance? There would've been a couple of files or maybe some manila envelopes?"
"No," she said. "Nothing like that."
I started to turn away.
"Oh, hang on," she said. "There was one thing."
I turned back and waited expectantly as she opened her purse. From it she pulled a giant silk flower, a mum, resplendent in a vivid red. I took it from her, smiling in spite of myself when I saw a big safety pin clipped to the back.
"He said to give you this," she reported, a puzzled look on her face. "And to tell you that, next time, he dares you to wear it."'

So here it is:

A Treasure Reborn by Pamela Griffin

'Penny transferred her feelings to the kettle as she scrubbed it out hard and hoped that a woman from his past had not already laid claim to Derek's heart.'

I thought about putting up a Christmas teaser, but then I thought this might be more fun.

Rise and Shine by Liz Curtis Higgs

'Wrinkles not only come from time and the sun but also from laughing at the absurdities of life, which increase exponentially as we mature. They come from looking surprised when your child hands you a woolly worm she found on the porch. They come from smiling when you see an old friend who is as wrinkled as you are. They are the road map of experiences that you alone have enjoyed.'

The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by C S Lewis

'My Dear Lucy,

I wrote this story for you, but when I began it I had not realized that girls grow quicker than books. As a result you are already too old for fairy tales, and by the time it is printed and bound you will be older still. But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again. You can then take it down from some upper shelf, dust it, and tell me what you think of it. I shall probably be too deaf to hear, and too old to understand a word you say, but I shall still be

your affectionate Godfather,

C. S. Lewis'

For something different, this is not actually part of the story, but the dedication at the beginning of the book. I just found it very interesting. Not everyone reads the dedications, but they can give insights into the author and why they wrote the book that you would otherwise be unaware of.

And for another piece of trivia, do you know what the author's initials stand for?

Clive Staples!

No wonder he wanted to be called Jack!

Rise and Shine by Liz Curtis Higgs

'Don't feel like exercising today?
I have the perfect alternative for you: laughter.
Fifteen faciaal muscles get involved when we laugh, which is why after a good bout of laughter your cheeks hurt. That's your face's way of telling you, "Please do this more often!" You know the dangers of being a weekend jogger. The same thing happens when we don't exercise those facial muscles often enough.
Laughter makes us feel wonderful all over.'
